The Jazz Generation
Established in 2003 in Sacramento, CA by singer, songwriter/bandleader, Suzanne Brooks, The Jazz Generation is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational band of men and women with exceptional talent, musicianship, training and sight-reading abilities, making it possible to deliver on the unusually large and diverse repertoire of Suzanne Brooks who hails from Philadelphia, PA and grew up with jazz, The Philly Sound and a family background in Gospel music. Because she is also multi-lingual (Spanish, French, Latin, Hawaiian and American Sign Language), she often sings in languages other than English. Her stage credits are diverse, including the Harlem Theater in NY, Interactive Asian Contemporary Theater in Sacramento, the Washington DC Hilton, University of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg Community College, The Stapeley Center, Philadelphia.

The musicians, masters in sight reading and with classical training, include pianist Chris Lee who has played for numerous groups and venues in California, including California State University, Sacramento; bassist/keyboardist Jim Wendt, whose performances with many other bands includes travels to Africa and India working with other musicians and collaborating to support an orphanage in India (also our music arranger); Dave Peters, extraordinary, sight reading drummer whose abilities resulted in his representing a drum manufacturer; Graham Smith, an extraordinary young musician who has already won an Ellington sax solo competition in NY; and Cliff Ford, male vocalist and background singer whose voice is a natural match with Brooks for outstanding duets and harmonies.

Brooks is also a playwright who has written, produced and directed several original shows, including "Great Women of Jazz, 1890-1990, History of Women if Jazz" and "I Believe I Can Fly" which featured a 112 year of woman telling her stories and reciting her poems with the band performing songs from each decade of her life. 400 attended the show; post event publicity reached more than 10 million.

The Jazz Generation has also worked with children and youth, including artist residencies, summer youth programs, library and other community events and on fundraisers for victims of Hurricane Katrina and other worthy causes. We are known for our artistry, creativity, improvisational skills (Brooks has learned from leading vocal coachees, including famed Bobby McFerrin and Seth Riggs in LA.) and for professionalism in appearance and action. We have numeous websites, including videos online.

The Jafar Curry Band is available for all venues, both small and large.Songwriter, vocalist, pianist, guitarist and producer are just a few of the titles associated with the multi-tasking and multi-talented Jafar. A consumate live performer, innovator and educator, Jafar's musicianship and high register vocals set him apart from a sea of industry products. As a skilled songwriter and performer, Jafar draws from the soul of past generations of musicians like Babyface, Stevie Wonder, and Brian McKnight. Jafar has written songs for the popular "Jomama Show" which airs on Tampa Bay's WBTP 95.7 FM, and for the "Friday Night Soul Party" hosted by Steve Williams on WMNF 88.5 FM. Jafar's music can be heard throughout the Southeast on AM and FM stations, internet radio stations, and internationally as he currently receives airplay on Radio MyD in Canary Islands, Spain and Relax Radio in Perth, Australia. His debut release "Jafar" has recorded CD sales in France, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Jafar's music career began at age 15, in Freeport, Bahamas, with a high school group called VOCAL. This was a group that patterned themselves after the Boyz II Men framework and developed intricate harmony - teaching Jafar a great deal about vocal music. VOCAL was a local success but could not yield the exposure desired by the individual members. In 1997, the group split after turning down a conflicting RCA recording contract and leaving Jafar on his way to Tampa, Florida, to finish high school and study music at the University of Tampa. In the beginning of Jafar's studies, it was all classics that led Jafar to yearn for musical freedom, but at the same time, gave him the extensive training he would need to write. Jafar studied classical voice, piano, and guitar for several years while writing and performing R&B and Jazz at local hot spots. While living in Tampa, Jafar picked up some local contacts that enabled him to record his works. Since his arrival on the American music scene, Jafar has put the bulk of his time and effort into making quality music. Scott Harrell of the Weekly Planet describes Jafar's music as "original and engaging", and also states "It is Curry's expressively liquid high register vocals that elevate his music far above the mundane." As a result of Jafar's hard work and local success, he was named "Best of the Bay" for 2004.

Contact Crazy Wolf Entertainment to book Julie McGregor
Julie McGregor
Canadian jazz vocalist, Julie McGregor, got her start in music at age of four listening to her father’s old jazz 78’s. She always had a strong leaning toward music and writing. She loves modern day singers but it was the influence of her father's old record collection of jazz greats however, that most greatly influenced her and her love of jazz. She has a comedic style and a great energy on stage. She sings swing, latin, waltzes, ballad, blues and jazz.

Julie works with many great jazz musicians and performs locally in Toronto. She has performed three times at Toronto Parkdale Arts Festival and last year, she performed with Bernie Senensky one of Canada's most sought-after jazz pianists, has been nominated for three Juno Awards (Canada's Grammy), was twice named Best Acoustic Pianist by The Jazz Report Awards, and has won the Socan Award for Best Jazz Composition. In 2004, Julie won the Best Jazz Vocalist at the Burlington Jazz Festival. In last year’s Luminato’s Art of Jazz Festival at the Distillery she performed in a Jazz Choir with guest soloists Kevin Mahogony and Barry Harris. In 2006, Julie was on stage with the Real Divas at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival in Nathan Phillips Square. Julie has also organized two very successful musical fundraising events to help save a church in her neighbourhood that now has been designated as a historical site. She also works a great deal with piano player Mark Kieswetter who work with Jon Hendriks, the late Zoot Simms and many other jazz greats.

"Caught jazz vocalist Julie McGregor’s act in Toronto.

I have listened to Julie perform over the last decade and her voice has matured and mellowed into a very real and personal sound. Her phrasing in her up-tempo version of ‘Speak Low’ was impeccable. Standards like ‘End of a Love Affair’ and ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is’ had distinctive styling. And, for a steamy, humid Friday night, the club was packed and most people stayed for the entire evening. Julie, hat on backwards and perched on a high stool, ended the night with a memorable rendition of ‘Good-Bye Pork Pie Hat’ by Charlie Mingus. The crowd loved it.

Julie McGregor is definitely a jazz vocalist to watch."

Singer, songwriter, and 4 time Billboard charting artist, Rachel Panay, is blurring the lines of Jazz, Cabaret, R&B & Pop with her new trio, the Sideswipers! Sultry ballads, classic swing songs, sweet bossa novas & rocking soulful blues have earned her a reputation as the one to watch on the international Vocal Jazz & Adult Contemporary music scene!

Rachel hit the dance scene in 2003 with her first underground anthem, The Walk of Shame. The Walk of Shame landed on Party Groove Fireball 2003 (Centaur Records), a CD compiled by superstar DJ team Ralphi Rosario and Abel Aguilera, known as Rosabel.

Rachel also made her first major label debut in English and Spanish on BMG’s Latin remake of Foxy’s Get Off, which was released throughout Latin America. Rachel released her second single and her first Billboard hit, Back to Love, which remained on the Billboard Hot Club Dance Play chart for 20 weeks, with 2 weeks in the ..2 position. Rachel’s follow up single, I Still Believe, was released in fall of 2005 and rose to the ..7 position on the Billboard Hot Club Dance Play chart. It quickly became a favorite on XM Satellite Radio, Music Choice, Sirius Satellite Radio and on mix-shows and dance format radio stations nationwide.

Rachel’s newest Act 2 Records single, The Real Thing is heating up dance floors across the nation. The Real Thing recently hit ..6 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart making this Rachel’s third Top 10 hit.

At Duke Ellington High School for the Performing Arts, Rachel trained formally in voice, dance, and musical theater and wrote her first composition, Gun of Love, which became WPGC Washington, DC’s theme song for its "Stop the Violence" campaign.

After graduating from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Rachel’s unique style emerged as she became deeply involved in the Boston live music scene, experimenting with the genres of Jazz, Acid Jazz, Pop, R&B, and even Latin Funk.

Rachel has received several awards including a recent WAMMY (Washington Area Music Awards) in March of 2006, and a nomination for Best New Artist at the International Dance Music Awards in 2005. Panay’s original composition, You Make Me Feel, penned with Andy Sikorski, was used on 3 episodes of the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005.

UGOCHI
This Chicago native is an international singing sensation who has been performing her original style of song and word poetics since she began her musical journey over ten years ago. She is known in her hometown best for her refined storytelling and songwriting ability as well as the technique and song style she has been known to dub “vocal harmonics.”

Generally Ugochi’s style of spoken word has been fused with her unique singing ability in order to generate a more powerful word sound attraction. A child of Nigeria, West Africa, Ugochi has grown into a full-fledged singer and songwriter comfortable enough with her talent for sound and the absence of it. A former rapper, turned poet, gone singer, Ugochi has become extremely versatile and creative with the range of music she is able to perform.

Ugochi’s music has allowed her to travel to many countries in Europe, including performing her extremely individualized form of sound power in Paris, Nigeria, Amsterdam, London, Leeds, Brasil, Italy and Jamaica. She has been featured on WTTW’s Wild Chicago and Artbeat Chicago, WXRT, WGN Morning Show, as well as performed with acclaimed artists such as Common, Malik Yusef, J. Ivy, Eric Benet, Michael McDermott, Edwin McCain, Maxi Priest, Umphrey’s McGee, and most recently John Legend and Femi Kuti. She was selected as a finalist in the HBO/Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam 2001 Competition. She also performed in Dance Africa Chicago 2001 where she received rave reviews by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times. In 2003, legendary Chicago diva Chaka Khan saluted the emerging artist as “someone who will have a long life in the music business,” when she was selected as a semi-finalist on Star Search. Ugochi also wrote the only original song for the critically acclaimed “Red Hot and Riot Compilation,” in honor of the late Fela Ransome Kuti and global AIDS awareness. The song, So Be It, was performed by R&B star Kelis.

Thanks to the underground success of her debut album project appropriately titled “African Buttafly,” Ugochi is currently working on her sophomore album project that is sure to be another word, sound phenomenon. Illinois Entertainer Magazine hails her as an urban singing phenomenon, a rising star with reach far beyond her city block. Chicago’s Power 92.3 radio personality, Cortney “Babygirl” Hicks, acknowledges her as the next independent artist to watch as she soars to her rightful place in music history. In 2006 Ugochi traveled to Brasil, Italy, London and Jamaica spreading her gospel of love and life through her music ministry. She continues to share her gift of song internationally. Ugochi’s hope is that she will see more of the planet through her music, eventually bridging the gap while taking in the sights and sounds of the world.

Chicago Afrobeat Project
Afrobeat cannot stand still. As the genre’s tempting sounds continue a resurgence across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) remains true to its original vision of breathing the intensity of Chicago’s rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat. Rather than become caricatures of the genre, CAbP slips a reverent nod to the tradition while delivering an energized originality different from any other band on the afrobeat scene today. At each of its 100+ live performances a year, the group’s frenzied songs hit audiences with a big enough one-two punch to tirelessly knock them onto the dance floor time and time again.

Afrobeat’s range of influences — funk, rock, jazz, afro-cuban, high life and juju music – settle into a hypnotic, dance-compelling pulse at the core of CAbP. The group layers a fiery originality around this core through high-energy rock and experimental jazz. The trance-like grooves that hold the floor in the tradition are pushed to new borders in CAbP’s second and self-produced album, (A) Move to Silent Unrest. In it, the group keeps true to the mix of respect to the tradition and forward-thinking experimentation that shine through in their live performances.

The individual players, coming from diverse backgrounds, each hold their own as soloists that ultimately characterize the live shows. Melodic and hard-hitting horn lines create a lyrical flow to the music, delivered by a cutting, driven rhythm section dynamic. Complex call-and-response percussion songs are dispersed throughout the performances. At select shows, African dancers from Chicago’s Muntu Dance Theatre accompany the band. Added up, the music is packaged with original songwriting that explores the stylistic reaches of afrobeat and a few classic covers delivered true to form.

The group currently performs across the country from coast to coast with notable festival dates including Bele Chere Music Festvial (2005, 2006) Wakarusa Music Festival (2006), Chicago World Music Festival (2003, 2006), Vassar College Jazz Festival (2005, 2006), Summer Camp (2005, 2007), Chicago’s Summer Dance Series (2005, 2007), and High Sierra Music Festival (2007).

CAbP was nominated as Best African Artist in the Chicago Music Awards (CMA) in 2004 and 2005, and was nominated for the CMA’s “Award of Honor for Contribution to World Beat Music” in 2006. As a natural extension of the group’s ability to connect diverse musical styles through afrobeat, CAbP has featured many notable Chicago guest musicians such as Howard Levy of Bela Fleck fame, Fareed Haque of Garaj Mahal, seven-time Grammy-winner Paul Wertico, Bobby Broom, Jeff Parker of Tortoise, Kalyan Pathak, Diverse, Ugochi, Morikeba Kouyate and many other Chicago greats.

Better than a Trio - The advantage of Four instead of a Trio!

Often, people will hire a trio ... which leave one instrument to create the melody line of all the music. While this is nice for a while, a steady hour or longer will get boring and tedious on the ears. The advantage of a four piece band is that you alternate the melody lines between more instruments which make the music much more interesting and appealing to the listener. For events lasting more than one hour, the difference is very apparent to the people at the event and the atmosphere can be much more exciting and pleasant with a four piece group. an Indianapolis Jazz Band with Indianapolis Jazz Musicians Indianapolis band, Indianapolis musician, Indianapolis Wedding, Indianapolis Party, Indianapolis Events
