The Latin-Sax Quartet
The LatinSax Quartet is a new collaboration among four up and coming saxophonists. Our goal is to demonstrate the beauty of the classical saxophone by focusing on a largely unknown yet rich and colorful repertoire of Cuban and Latin American composers. Our group was formed with the encouragement of the legendary Latin Jazz musician and classical composer Paquito D’Rivera. Inspired in Marcel Mule's French School, and followed in Havana by my father Tito and his 'Conjunto Sinfónico de Saxofones' in 1943, Oscar Góngora and his Latin-Sax Quartet are an ideal example of what the Cuban classical school of the Saxophone has become. The group offers a perfect balance between the academic discipline and the Typical charm and complex rhythms inherent to Cuban music. A real Sax pleasure! Written by: Paquito D'Rivera On March 19th we premiered at the Kosciuszko Foundation in Manhattan with Paquito D’ Rivera, nine time Grammy Winner and 2008 Frankfurt Music Prize. This evening was sponsored by The Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York. Our program, Music From Cuba: The Pioneers included many amazing Cuban Composers from the 1800s to the present, some of which have never been heard throughout the world. In our program we played music from Alejandro Garcia Caturla, Amadeo Roldan, Andres Alen, Ignacio Cervantes, Ernesto Lecuona, Paquito D’ Rivera and many others. Our repertoire also includes Classical and Contemporary Latin American Music.
