"Love, Peace & Happiness Band"
FANS WON’T LET THEM STOP SINGING

By John L. Edwards, III

Chattanooga Courier Publisher

Friends since attending high school here at Riverside, they began singing as a group while attending UTC. After performing at campus events and area high schools, the trio acquired a manager and began taking bookings at local night spots. East Ninth Street, now M.L. King Boulevard, was the center of night life in the African American community.

By the mid-seventies, the group, with their rich harmony and fancy steps, had amassed a large following wherever they performed.

Chattanooga has long had a reputation for producing great singers and musicians and there was still a lot of talent here in the seventies. “It was a challenge for us, being very young and in college, to hold our own with them and earn their respect,” said Valitus Edwards, who brought the group back together.

They have opened for legendary groups like The Temptations, WAR, and The Impressions. Their recent travels have taken them to Atlanta, Dalton, South Carolina, Birmingham, Huntsville and Knoxville. Their specialties are beach music parties and wedding receptions.

Kenneth Parks has a Masters Degree in foreign language and teaches French and Spanish at The Baylor School. When he's not enjoying his favorite hobby, which is traveling to places throughout Europe, South America, Mexico and Canada, he is fulfilling his duties as music director of the gospel group, Kenneth Parks & Rejoice.

Valitus Edwards has a Masters Degree in Professional Writing and is the group leader. On the stage he keeps the audience in stitches with his jokes and antics. Mr. Edwards was nominated for an Annie Award as the best male lead actor in the play, Dream Girls, at the Chattanooga Theatre Center in 1989. He is also a member of ASCAP and a professional songwriter for Palo Duro Records.

Both Parks and Edwards agree that Lutrell Brown is the most talented vocalist in the group. Lutrell comes from a long line of talented siblings, all of whom sing very well. Lutrell’s latest TV performance was on Gospel Notes. Lutrell is an original member and his hobby is singing.

Band members consist of Gretrell Watkins, Stan Elder, Ralph Chislom and Cory Branham.
