Bette Bao Lord has earned accolades as a master storyteller who speaks with a true voice of China. Not only is she a best-selling author, she has held numerous positions associated with politics and the arts.

Ms. Lord's latest book, The Middle Heart, a Book of the Month Club Selection, has six foreign editions to date and is to be made into a mini-series by Hallmark Hall of Fame. Spring Moon is her best-known book. Its list of honors is just as impressive: New York Times bestseller for thirty-one weeks, nomination for the American Book Award, a main selection of the Literary Guild, and nineteen foreign editions. Ms. Lord has authored three other books and articles for such publications as the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, the New York Times, and USA Today.

She has appeared on several national television programs including: CBS Evening News, Face the Nation, McNeil Lehrer News Hour, 48 Hours, Good Morning America, and Larry King Live, among others. Ms. Lord was the subject of a Barbara Walters Special on 20/20 and was a consultant to CBS News for their Tiananmen Square coverage.

In addition, she was the co-producer of The People's Art Theatre's Beijing production of The Caine Mutiny, directed by Charlton Heston.

Ms. Lord received the honor of an appointment by President Clinton to the International Broadcasting Board of Governors to oversee all U.S. non-military international broadcasting. Another position she holds is that of chairperson of the Freedom House, which promotes democratic institutions around the world. At one of the organization's conferences, President Clinton said of Ms. Lord, "I'm honored to be introduced by someone who writes so powerfully about the past and is working so effectively to shape the future."

She has served on many Board of Trustees, which at present include: The Freedom Forum, The Kennedy Center Community and Friends, and The National Portrait Gallery. Ms. Lord also serves on the Advisory Council of the Music Educators National Conference. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Author's Guild, PEN, and the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Ever dedicated to her work, Ms. Lord has received numerous awards including: honorary doctorates from seven universities, U.S. International Agency Award for Outstanding Contributions, The Women of Honor Award from The National Council of Women, New York Public Library's Literary Lion, American Women for International Understanding Award, Qingyun Award from the China Institute, Distinguished American Award, and Woman of the Year Award from Chinatown Planning Council.

Ms. Lord's speaking engagements include such distinguished events and places as: ABA Convention, Asia Society, Commonwealth Club, Council on Foreign Affairs, NASA, Massachusetts Mutual Board Meeting, National Council on Women, New York Public Library, Templeton International, World Affairs Council, and major universities in the U.S. and China.

Ms. Lord received her BA from Tufts University and MA from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. She is married to Winston Lord, former U.S. Ambassador to China.
