It is the rare comedian that can simultaneously spark moments of laughter and moments of reflection. This talent comes naturally to Shang Forbes. Social analysis and urban flavor walk hand in hand with Shang, as he prowls the stage in the tradition of Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and Dick Gregory. Widely known for his ability to attack the funny bone through the conscience, the entertainer challenges his audience with an unusual blend of sophisticated style and offbeat observations. He focuses on the margins of society to stay on the cutting-edge. While other comedians dwell in hateful and misogynistic subject matter, Shang's material has a unique combination of wisdom and wit ripped from the annals of history and today's headlines. The charismatic comic has proven his premiere stand-up skills with appearances nationwide and abroad. With one of the most memorable performances of 1995 on HBO's "DEF Comedy Jam" and a half-hour special on BET's "Comicview Grand Stand", Shang has cemented his position as one of the brightest African-American funnymen in the business. His passionate and explosive humor has also been show cased on "Politically Incorrect," The Best of the Evening at the Improv," "Showtime Comedy Club," "Friday Night Videos," "Caroline's Comedy Hour" and "Comic Justice," among others. In addition, he has displayed impressive comedic acting ability as a series regular on the late-night laughfest "The Newz" and a featured guest starring role on a recent episode of "The Jamie Foxx Show." Shang will continue to rise to the top of the comedy ranks with high-profile acting, televised stand-up and personal appearances in 1997. HBO recently signed the clever entertainer for a half-hour comedy special scheduled to air on the cable network in late 1997. Also, the popular comedian will star in the debut episode of Comedy Central's new performance program to be televised later in the year. In addition, he performed at the 1997 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and will be featured in several upcoming international shows. Needless to say, Shang has come a long way from the burroughs of New York. Originally from the Bronx, the Carnegie Mellon University graduate and aspiring illustrator began his comedy career on a dare. A friend bet him $50.00 to take the stage during open-mic at a local comedy club. Shang won the bet, caught the comedy bug and quickly became an underground favorite with his dark avant-garde, socio-political style. When not on the road, Shang resides in Los Angeles, where he practices another talent; music. Often inserting spoken word and musical elements into his comedy, he creates and performs music in his rare free time.
