Heather B.'s first moment in the spotlight came as a cast member of MTV's The Real World during the series' first season. While she had an opportunity to showcase her rapping talents, record companies' responses were lukewarm towards signing a female rapper, so B. struck out on her own. She used the money she got from an MTV talent development deal that never materialized to open her own beauty parlor in Jersey City, which is staffed and run by family members. She then went into the studio, recorded a hardcore rap single entitled "All Glocks Down," and distributed it herself as best she could. As a result, she secured a 12-inch deal with Pendulum Records and a chance to prove herself.
