The Georgia Mass Choir spent the past year counting its blessings.

The highly acclaimed gospel choir reached a musical milestone with the November 1996 release of an eighth spectacular album, The Georgia Mass Choir: Greatest Hits.

The world also heard the Georgia Mass in the globally televised 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, during which the choir performed six times -- including in the Opening Ceremonies and the healing re-opening ceremonies of Olympic Centennial Park, after the bombing.

The 150-member group has continued to be honored with Stellar, Grammy and Dove Award nominations.

This faith-filled vocal powerhouse also is featured in Touchstone Pictures’ upcoming feature film, The Preacher’s Wife. Three of the choir’s signature songs from Greatest Hits – He’s All Over Me, Joy and Hold On, Help Is On The Way -- are on the movie’s soundtrack CD. They’re among the choir’s six songs in the movie, all of which are led by Grammy-winning Preacher’s Wife star Whitney Houston.

The choir was cast by director Penny Marshall. The group is joining her and Houston on a national media tour supporting the movie. Performance dates include NBC’s Saturday Night Live and ABC’s Good Morning America.

The choir’s popular and critical success has been hailed in such major music magazines as Billboard, Jet, Ebony and Gospel Today. Other honors range from the GMWA Excellence Award to receiving the keys to the City of Atlanta.

The magic began in 1983 in Macon, Ga., when the choir was organized by the Rev. Milton Biggham, who returned to his native state to launch the group after finding success at Savoy Records in New York. Biggham auditioned 600 hopefuls from every corner of Georgia and signed up the finest singers, ranging in age from 13 through 70. Today, he not only is founder, lead singer and major songwriter for the choir, he is director of Savoy Records, the choir’s label.

The Greatest Hits disc draws from the choir’s previous seven albums -- Yes, He Can; I’m Going to Hold Out; I’m Free; We’ve Got The Victory; Hold On, Help Is On The Way; I Sing Because I’m Happy and Lord Take me Through.
